What is Anti-VEGF Medications?
Four anti-VEGF medications used to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) include Lucentis, Eylea, Macugen, and Avastin. Neovascular AMD is caused by the presence of a protein in the eye called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Avastin, an anti-VEGF mediation, is often packaged into single-use syringes containing a silicone lubricant inside the barrel.
What is Happening with Anti-VEGF Medications?
When the Anti-VEGF medication becomes tainted with silicone oil droplets, patients may experience silicone floaters and contamination that can result in serious eye-related issues. Silicone oil droplets can trigger a rise in intraocular pressure and cause retinal and vision damage that permanently alter the user’s vision. Treatment for silicone oil droplets in the eye involves a surgical procedure known as a vitrectomy. The surgery may impair future treatment for macular degeneration.
Reports of eye injuries caused by silicone oil droplets have continued to increase for years. An examination of 60 cases of patients using intravitreal silicone droplets revealed that 70% of those individuals were symptomatic for floaters. The syringes used to administer Eylea, Lucentis, and Avastin have not been designed or approved by the FDA for injection into the eye. The syringes are not produced by the medicine’s manufacturer, but rather are manufactured by various unregulated compounding facilities.
