What is Belviq/Belviq XR?

Belviq/Belviq XR (lorcaserin) was approved by the FDA in 2012.  The medication works by targeting chemical signals that control appetite and allows people to feel fuller after eating smaller amounts of food.   In conjunction with diet and exercise, Belviq is prescribed to treat obesity.  Belviq may also be prescribed to obese patients that have other conditions linked to obesity including diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

What is Happening with Belviq/Belviq XR?

The FDA recently stated that it found an increased risk of cancer in patients who are taking Belviq and Belviq XR for weight loss.  The announcement was the result of a clinical trial that tested the safety of Belviq.  The FDA required the drug’s manufacturer, Eisai, Inc., to conduct a clinical trial to understand the risks of Belviq.  The study followed 12,000 participants over the course of five years and found that more patients who were prescribed lorcaserin were diagnosed with cancer than those participants who were not taking lorcaserin.

The FDA has not determined whether lorcaserin causes or contributes to an elevated risk of cancer.  However, based on its findings, the FDA has advised health care professionals to carefully assess the risks and benefits of prescribing this medication for weight loss to patients.
