By promoting a feeling of satiety, the medication curbs the desire to eat. Lorcaserin is intended to be taken in conjunction with a modified diet and physical activity.
What is Happening with Belviq/Belviq XR (lorcaserin)?
Eisai Inc., the manufacturer of Belviq/Belviq XR, conducted a long-term safety study on Belviq to assess the risk of cardiac events while taking the medication. The FDA announced that it reviewed the data from the study, which suggested an increased risk of cancer for users of Belviq/Belviq XR. On February 13, 2020, the FDA requested that the manufacturer of Belviq/Belviq XR voluntarily remove the drug from the U.S. market. Eisai submitted a request to withdraw the drug at that time.
The manufacturer’s five-year study indicated an elevated rate of cancer for those who took Belviq in comparison to the placebo group. Belviq users showed an increased risk of pancreatic, colorectal, and lung cancers in particular. The FDA suggests that patients taking Belviq/Belviq XR discontinue its use and speak to their health care professionals about an alternative medication.
