Beovu Lawsuits – retinal vasculitis and retinal vascular occlusion

In June 2020, LK notified readers about the potential dangers of the prescription drug Beovu (brolucizumab). We alerted users that treatment for Neovascular (Wet) Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) with Beovu (brolucizumab) has been associated with retinal vasculitis and retinal vascular occlusion. At that time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved a new warning label for Beovu based on reports of adverse ophthalmological conditions. Since the FDA approved the warning label for Beovu, new reports and studies have detected cases of retinal vasculitis and/or retinal vascular occlusion in patients who were given Beovu injections to treat AMD.

What is Beovu?

Beovu treats wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) through intravitreal injection. For more information, please refer to our previous article.

What is Happening with Beovu?

In June 2020, the FDA’s label update included safety information regarding the occurrence of retinal vasculitis and/or retinal vascular occlusion accompanied by intraocular inflammation for patients taking Beovu. Following the label change, other sources continued to report incidents of adverse retinal conditions. In August 2020, the American Journal of Ophthalmology published an editorial stating that the authors had ceased prescribing Beovu as a result of reports of ocular inflammation. They also noted that similar serious cases of retinal vasculitis were not observed in conjunction with other commonly used treatments for AMD. In July 2020, HHS Public Access reported that 26 eyes of 25 patients demonstrated retinal vasculitis after treatment with Beovu. The majority of those cases (92%) were associated with intraocular inflammation. In August, 2020, JAMA Ophthalmology reported on a patient with acute visual acuity loss in one eye after she received a second dose of Beovu to treat AMD. Similarly, a patient experienced severe vision deterioration after three injections of Beovu and was ultimately diagnosed with retinal arteriolar occlusion after taking Beovu according to the American Journal of Ophthalmology.

In September 2020, Novartis updated the EU label of Beovu to include the warnings in the FDA label change. The EU label now recommends that patients who experience these conditions discontinue Beovu treatment immediately.

Beovu Side Effects and Complications

Common side effects of Beovu include:

Reduced visual clarity;
Cataracts;
Broken blood vessels;
Floaters; and
Eye pain.

Serious complications of Beovu that may lead to complete vision loss include:

Retinal vasculitis (inflammation of the vascular branches of the retinal artery);
Retinal artery occlusion (blockage of the retinal artery carrying oxygen to the retina); and
Intraocular inflammation.
