UPSTATE NEW YORK MESOTHELIOMA LAWYERS FROM THE NY ASBESTOS LITIGATION FIRM OF LEVY KONIGSBERG LLP SPONSOR KAYAKING FOR A CURE, AN EVENT TO RAISE MONEY FOR MESOTHELIOMA RESEARCH IN UPSTATE NEW YORK.

SCHUYLERVILLE, New York, September 25, 2012 – Over 100 kayakers took to the water for a 16 mile kayak trip in Upstate New York on September 22, 2012, to raise money for mesothelioma research. Mesothelioma lawyers from Levy Konigsberg LLP (“LK”), a leading national law firm that fights for asbestos victims and their families, sponsored the event which was organized by Mark Wells, and is in its second successful year. The 100 plus paddlers launched from Fort Hardy Park in Schuylerville, NY, and kayaked all the way to the Mechanicville Boat dock in Mechanicville, NY, which took over 6 hours. The event raised awareness about mesothelioma as well as thousands of dollars for mesothelioma research.

“LK is proud to support this wonderful event, which will help raise money for a much needed cure to mesothelioma. This event, along with non-profit organizations such as the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, provide a great service to the public by raising the awareness of this awful and needless disease and providing support to families across the Capital Region who are afflicted with asbestos-related diseases and have to live with the consequences of asbestos companies’ negligence. We offer our heartfelt congratulations and thanks to Mark and Linda Wells for organizing this fundraising event,” said Jerry Block, a New York mesothelioma lawyer and partner at LK. This event drew kayakers from across the capital region including Saratoga County, Rensselaer County, Albany County, and Schenectady County. The money raised was donated to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, which is a national organization of mesothelioma survivors, their families, medical professionals, and advocates that support survivors and their families, as well as providing funding to critical research to find a cure.

Kayaking for a Cure was organized by Mark Wells, whose 28 year old daughter Linda Wells is fighting mesothelioma. Linda’s story is one of strength, determination, and hope. She was diagnosed with malignant epithelial mesothelioma in 2008 and has undergone extensive treatment to fight this disease. She is only 28 years old, and one of the youngest mesothelioma survivors that LK is aware of. As a baby and young child, her father Mark worked with asbestos containing products in the automotive industry and also while doing home repair and renovation work. Linda was exposed to asbestos through the asbestos dust Mark brought home on his clothes as well as dust created in and around the house during the repairs.

It has been known for decades that family members of men and women who work with asbestos can develop mesothelioma from the dust brought home by their loved ones. There is no known safe level of asbestos exposure. Moreover, it is well documented in the medical and scientific literature that children who are exposed to asbestos dust at a young age are at a particularly high risk of being diagnosed with asbestos related diseases later in life.

“Mark and Linda Wells and their family, are remarkable people who are not only fighting this disease which is 100% preventable and never had to happen, but also standing up and trying to help all people who are dealing with the effects of asbestos. They are a wonderful family, and an example of what strong mesothelioma survivors and their families can do, and it is an honor to be at this Kayaking for a Cure event to show our support,” said another LK mesothelioma attorney that attended the event.

Malignant epithelial mesothelioma is only caused by asbestos exposure, and the United States and a few industrialized countries in the world that have still not totally banned the use of asbestos.

LK is a national plaintiff law firm that stands up and fights for asbestos victims and their families, and has a track record of winning some of the highest asbestos and mesothelioma verdicts/settlements in the country. The firm has a long history of involvement in the Capital Region and Upstate New York and has recently opened offices in Albany, NY [updated on 3/25/2013].

ATTENTION: Mesothelioma has no known cure and often causes severe pain, suffering, and other types of damage, such as loss of consortium, and loss of income. Additionally, due to the exceedingly high cost of mesothelioma treatments, many families exhaust savings and accumulate financial debt in order to pay for the medical expenses of their family member.

Under the law of most states, pain and suffering from mesothelioma may be compensated through the award of money damages, usually obtained with the help of experienced mesothelioma attorneys. In some states other types of damages may also be recovered.

Asbestos litigation affords mesothelioma victims the opportunity to receive financial compensation and hold accountable the companies that caused their asbestos exposure.

IMPORTANT: If you or your family member has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should get in touch with a mesothelioma lawyer as early as possible to determine if you have a mesothelioma case and to:

  • Preserve your rights to bring a legal action against the responsible parties within the limited time frame allowed by law, known as statute of limitations;
  • Obtain maximum compensation in your case by being able to:
    • Preserve evidence and establish facts of the asbestos exposure while the claimant is still alive and able to provide information;
    • File and resolve a lawsuit against the responsible parties before they file for bankruptcy or, if they already have, to obtain compensation before their bankruptcy trust funds run out of money;
  • Expedite your case, as courts tend to give higher priority to mesothelioma lawsuits where the claimant is still alive.
