April 16, 2013 – On April 15, 2013, another for-profit college agreed to pay a civil settlement after the school’s former Financial Aid Director pled guilty to submitting falsified financial aid applications to the U.S. Department of Education. The school- which does business as United States University and is owned by Educacion Significativa, LLC, and IAC Funding, LLC – received Pell Grant funding for ineligible students between December 2008 and February 2011. The former Financial Aid Director admitted to knowingly falsifying students’ degree status so that the school could receive Pell Grant funding for students that had already completed a Bachelor’s degree.
The fraud was uncovered after a former student and employee of the school filed a whistleblower, or qui tam, lawsuit under the federal False Claims Act. The False Claims Act permits private citizens with knowledge of fraud against the government to bring an action on behalf of the United States. As provided by the False Claims Act, the whistleblower will receive a share of the government’s recovery.
