NEW YORK, New York, August 6, 2013 – Top mesothelioma doctors and researchers are scheduled to speak at the 2nd Annual New York City Mesothelioma Conference on September 27, 2013. The conference, which will take place at the Harvard Club in Manhattan, NY highlights two days of activities devoted to raising awareness and finding a cure for mesothelioma. The morning before the conference, mesothelioma patients, families and others supporting the search for a cure will gather at the Today Show for National Mesothelioma Awareness Day (September 26th) to bring their message to millions of viewers worldwide.
Mesothelioma is a cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. Nearly 3,000 patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the United States. The New York City conference is organized by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF), the leading non-profit seeking a cure for mesothelioma, as well as better treatment and surgical options for the asbestos-related disease.
Among the topics that will be addressed during the morning of the conference are the initial medical work-up of mesothelioma cases and surgical options for both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. The surgeons presenting in the morning will be Dr. Robert Caccavale, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Somerset Medical Center (New Jersey); Dr. Raja Flores, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital; and Dr. John Chabot, Chief Division of GI/Endocrine Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.
Another topic that will be covered during the morning of the conference is genetic factors relating to mesothelioma (Drs. Mark Robson and Marjorie Zauderer of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), as well as novel biomarkers that have the potential of being able to diagnose mesothelioma at an earlier stage while the disease is more treatable (Dr. Harvey Pass of New York University Langone Medical Center).
In the afternoon program of the conference, Dr. Andreas Rimner, a radiation oncologist, will educate conference attendees on the latest developments in radiation therapy for pleural mesothelioma patients. Dr. Lee Krug, a thoracic oncologist, will then address current clinical trials with new agents for treating mesothelioma. Both Drs. Rimner and Krug are with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Andy Todd of Mt. Sinai Hospital, whose specialty is in preventative medicine, will address asbestos exposure and risk of mesothelioma.
Nurse Mary Hesdorffer, the Executive Director of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF), will present on social support for mesothelioma patients and caregivers along with Liz Blackler, a clinical social worker at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
The 2nd Annual New York Mesothelioma Conference is organized by MARF and funded by an educational grant from Levy Konigsberg LLP (“LK”), a law firm that has been representing mesothelioma patients and their families in legal claims proceedings for over 25 years.
Robert Komitor, a trial lawyer and partner with LK, who has represented mesothelioma patients and their families for over three decades, will present at the conference on the issue of legal rights in asbestos claims, including trust fund proceedings and lawsuits.
The conference, entitled “Malignant Mesothelioma: Knowledge is Hope,” is open to the public for a $25 fee, which includes all conference presentations, breakfast, lunch and cocktail/appetizers after the close of the conference.

ATTENTION: Mesothelioma has no known cure and often causes severe pain, suffering, and other types of damage, such as loss of consortium, and loss of income. Additionally, due to the exceedingly high cost of mesothelioma treatments, many families exhaust savings and accumulate financial debt in order to pay for the medical expenses of their family member.
Under the law of most states, pain and suffering from mesothelioma may be compensated through the award of money damages, usually obtained with the help of experienced mesothelioma attorneys. In some states other types of damages may also be recovered.
Asbestos litigation affords mesothelioma victims the opportunity to receive financial compensation and hold accountable the companies that caused their asbestos exposure.
IMPORTANT: If you or your family member has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should get in touch with a mesothelioma lawyer as early as possible to determine if you have a mesothelioma case and to:
- Preserve your rights to bring a legal action against the responsible parties within the limited time frame allowed by law, known as statute of limitations;
- Obtain maximum compensation in your case by being able to:
- Preserve evidence and establish facts of the asbestos exposure while the claimant is still alive and able to provide information;
- File and resolve a lawsuit against the responsible parties before they file for bankruptcy or, if they already have, to obtain compensation before their bankruptcy trust funds run out of money;
- Expedite your case, as courts tend to give higher priority to mesothelioma lawsuits where the claimant is still alive.
