The Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers and Kids II Rocking Sleepers have been recalled after being linked to dozens of infant deaths. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) called upon the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) to initiate warnings about the immediate dangers of infant sleepers and advised parents that children of all ages should stop using these products immediately.

What are Infant Sleepers?
Infant sleepers are reclining chairs that hold babies on their backs at a 30-degree angle. They are designed to help babies sleep more comfortably since the surface is not flat, like cribs and bassinets. The infant sleepers involved in the recall were reportedly developed with minimal medical consultation and were not tested in clinical research trials before becoming publicly available.
What is Happening with Infant Sleepers?
Since the mid-1990s, the AAP has recommended that infants sleep flat on their backs to reduce the risk of suffocation. Because infant sleepers do not comply with these recommendations, the AAP urged the CPSC to recall the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers on April 9, 2019. The CPSC and Fisher-Price alerted consumers to stop using the product when the infant reaches 3 months of age or is capable of rolling over, citing 10 infant deaths that occurred in the Rock ‘n Play.
According to a report by Consumer Reports, at least 32 deaths have been linked to the use of the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play. These deaths occurred between 2011 and 2018 and included babies even younger than the 3-month threshold cited in the initial warning. The cause of death listed for some babies was asphyxia, or the inability to breathe caused by the babies’ position.
Based on these reports, Fisher-Price recalled the Rock ‘n Play on April 12, 2019. Shortly thereafter, the Kids II Rocking Sleeper was recalled. The AAP has issued a statement that infant sleepers are dangerous for all infants and should be removed from the market immediately. CPSC added that it plans to reconsider the whole category of infant sleeper products following reports of infant deaths.

Infant Sleeper Complications
Infants can roll over while unrestrained, which can lead to suffocation and death. Also, the baby may not be able to breathe properly due to the incline of the sleeper, which can lead to asphyxiation. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) related to sleep is the leading cause of accidental death for children under 1 year of age in the United States.
