What is Elmiron?

Elmiron (Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium) is a prescription drug used to treat painful bladder conditions, including interstitial cystitis.

Why is Elmiron Dangerous?

Researchers have determined that long-term use of Elmiron may cause degenerative eye disorders, including pigmentary maculopathy, which may lead to vision loss, vision distortion, and even blindness.

New studies suggest that as many as 25% of long-term Elmiron users may have developed ocular damage, which can lead to vision loss or blindness. Some of these patients may have initially been diagnosed with another vision disorder such as macular degeneration or pattern dystrophy, but after closer examination may have injuries related to their chronic Elmiron use.

What are the Symptoms of an Elmiron injury?

Patients who have taken Elmiron for a long period of time may experience pigmentary retinal maculopathy, a type of degenerative visual disorder, with symptoms including:

  • Blurry Vision
  • Loss of Close Vision
  • Night Blindness
  • Visual Dimming
  • Difficulty Reading
  • Blindness
  • Dark Spots
