More women have recently stood up and demanded justice after surviving sexual abuse and violence in New York State prisons. Represented by Levy Konigsberg Attorney Anna Kull, 10 women have filed sexual abuse lawsuits against New York State for its failure to protect them from repeated sexual abuse while serving time at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Our legal team has been investigating sexual abuse claims from former Bedford Hills inmates, and we are now taking legal action using the New York Adult Survivors Act.
According to the lawsuits, many different staff at Bedford Hills were involved in sexual abuse, such as:
- Correctional officers
- Supervisors
- Volunteers
- Doctors
- Contractors
- And others
Despite the widespread abuse and repeated sexual violence, little was done to protect the inmates and penalize offenders. As unthinkable as this might sound, it is part of a disturbing trend of The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (NYS DOCCS) of negligence and wrongdoing that has prompted many different sexual abuse lawsuits filed in New York. The egregious negligence of the government in its failure to stop prison sexual abuse is the primary accusation in all 10 Bedford Hills Correctional Facility lawsuits.
Leading the Way for Prison Sexual Abuse Survivors
With the Adult Survivors Act, which created a lookback window that closes this November, former inmates at Bedford Hills can seek justice and compensation through the civil justice system, even for abuses that occurred many years ago. Attorney Anna Kull has taken the lead position in many such cases and is seen as a trailblazing trial attorney for sexual abuse lawsuits against prisons and related government departments.
Attorney Anna Kull has been quoted as saying, “The high prevalence rate of officer-inmate sexual victimization at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in New York is dreadful. Investigations have exposed widespread corruption and misconduct within the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The New York Adult Survivors Act is an important vehicle in restoring justice to those who have been victimized and a powerful instrument in fostering fundamental change in the New York prison system. An era of legal reckoning is among us against abusers and the institutions which enabled them.”
In recognition of her spearheading approach to these lawsuits, Attorney Anna Kull was recently featured in a New York Daily News cover story. In the article, the stories of several former female inmates of the now-closed Bayview Correctional Facility were shared; Attorney Kull is representing them in that legal fight. Attorney Kull was also featured in a recent Brut Media short film documentary – A Chance for Justice: Life After Abuse in Prison – that took a closer look into the story and struggles of a sex assault survivor from Bedford Hills. The film also shares harrowing stories of Bayview inmates and how Anna is now leading the legal fight for them. Attorney Anna Kull is using the same tenacity and skill to stand up for the rights of her 10 Bedford Hills sexual abuse lawsuit plaintiffs. The Appeal, a popular law-centric newsroom, also published a feature piece on Attorney Kull and her representation of the women who were abused at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility and other such facilities across New York.
