More brave survivors are continuing to come forward to demand justice after surviving childhood sexual abuse in a New Jersey juvenile detention center. Represented by Levy Konigsberg Attorneys Moshe Maimon and Clark Binkley, 25 men filed sexual abuse lawsuits this week against the State of New Jersey for the repeated sexual abuse they suffered while confined as juveniles at the New Jersey Training Schools at Jamesburg and Skillman. Some of these men were also abused as children at other state facilities, like the Juvenile Medium Security Facility and the Voorhees Residential Community Home. This brings the total number of Levy Konigsberg clients bringing claims against the State of New Jersey for sexual abuse in the juvenile detention system to 100.

Our legal team is leading the way in investigating sexual abuse claims from former Jamesburg and Skillman detainees, and we have been taking legal action using the New Jersey Child Sexual Abuse Act.

Generations of New Jersey’s most vulnerable children have been abused, neglected, and traumatized at the state’s juvenile detention facilities. The 100 men who have filed claims so far include those who suffered sexual abuse as far back as the 1980s and as recently as the 2010s. The culture of abuse that allowed this to happen endured over decades despite widespread reports and investigations into prison-like conditions, violent staff, lack of oversight, and the frequent use of inhumane strip searches and solitary confinement.

While Skillman (also known as the Lloyd McCorkle Training School) closed in the early 1990s, the Jamesburg facility remains open to this day, despite years of promises by the State of New Jersey to shut it down.

Levy Konigsberg has earn national recognition representing survivors nationwide in civil sexual abuse lawsuits – including claims against powerful institutions such as the Catholic Church and Boy Scouts of America. According to the lawsuit, many different staff at NJTS were involved in sexual abuse, such as:

  • Correctional/detention officers
  • Counselors
  • Supervisors
  • Teachers
  • Nurses
  • And others

Despite the widespread sexual abuse of children at the state’s juvenile detention facilities, the State of New Jersey has done little to protect these children or to punish their abusers. It is this pattern of negligence on the part of the New Jersey Commission for Juvenile Justice and other state agencies that has prompted the filing of these lawsuits. The state government’s shocking negligence in its failure to stop the sexual abuse of children in its juvenile detention facilities is detailed in the complaints that were filed this week.

Leading the Way for Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

With the New Jersey Child Sexual Abuse Act of 2019, which extended the statute of limitations to age 55 for filing civil lawsuits in cases of child sexual abuse, former detainees at facilities like Jamesburg and Skillman can seek justice and compensation, even for abuse that occurred many years ago. Levy Konigsberg and its team of dedicated trial attorneys are at the forefront of childhood sexual abuse litigation, having filed dozens of lawsuits nationwide on behalf of survivors. In January 2024, Levy Konigsberg’s pioneering lawsuit on behalf of 50 men who were abused at Jamesburg was covered by the Associated Press.

In announcing this week’s filings, Levy Konigsberg Partner Moshe Maimon stated:
“For too long, vulnerable children in the state’s custody have suffered unthinkable abuse at juvenile detention centers across the state, victims of a broken juvenile justice system. The state had a responsibility to these children and it failed that responsibility.”

Levy Konigsberg represents over 200 such survivors of sexual abuse at New Jersey’s juvenile detention facilities and plans to continue fighting tirelessly on their behalf.
