What are Breast Implants?

Breast implants are medical devices that are implanted under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle to rebuild breast tissue after mastectomy or other damage to the breast (reconstruction), or to increase breast size (augmentation). They are also used in revision surgeries, which correct or improve the result of an original surgery. Breast implants can be filled with either silicone gel or saline. They have either smooth or textured surfaces, and come in different shapes and sizes. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, about 290,000 women in the United States had implants for breast enlargement in 2016, and 109,000 received implants for reconstruction after breast cancer.

What is Happening with Breast Implants?

The FDA and other medical research journals may have discovered a link between breast implants and Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The FDA reviewed 359 medical device reports of breast implant-associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, and at least 9 women have died as a result. In a January, 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, researchers found that the incidence of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma in breasts with textured implants is 67.6 times higher than the incidence in those patients without breast implants. A 2016 study conducted by World Health Organization researchers reported that the cancer usually takes about 10 years to develop after the implant is first inserted, and the cancer usually stays right around the implant. The cancer can spread to other areas in the body as well.
