What is Chlorpyrifos?
Chlorpyrifos is an insecticide sold under the brand names Lorsban, Lock-On and Cobalt. It was also marketed under the name Dursban for various residential and industrial uses. The chemical is applied broadly to agricultural food crops and to control pests, such as fire ants and mosquitoes. It may also be applied to treat golf courses, wood fences, and utility poles. The use of chlorpyrifos for in-home applications was restricted in 2000, but the use of chlorpyrifos for agriculture and pest control by homeowners and pest control companies continues. Chlorpyrifos can be legally used indoors only in containers with treated baits.
What is Happening with Chlorpyrifos?
In 2019, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rejected a proposal to ban chlorpyrifos despite research that links the chemical to brain damage in infants and children. The conclusion that farmers can continue to use chlorpyrifos on various food crops, including almonds and citrus, is based on the absence of significant data on the effects of the chemical on neurological development according to the EPA.
The EPA had previously restricted application of the chemical based on research that raised serious concerns about its safety. The findings of several studies revealed that pregnant women who lived near agricultural settings had an increased risk of having a child diagnosed with autism. Other studies found a link between moderate exposure to chlorpyrifos and memory deficits, low IQ, and diminished breathing capacity. In addition, regulators have found that cognitive and neurological impairments resulting from exposure can occur at lower levels than previously reported. Abundant research on children in California, which grows a large portion of the nation’s fruit and nuts, supports the finding that the chemical has had a negative impact on the cognitive and neurological development of children and infants.
