What is Clozaril, Fazaclo ODT and Versacloz?

Clozaril, Fazaclo ODT and Versacloz are antipsychotic medications used for the treatment of schizophrenia.  Clozapine is prescribed for patients with recurrent suicidal behavior linked to a diagnosis of schizophrenia and other schizoaffective disorders. The medication works by balancing certain neurotransmitters in the brain to prevent suicidal tendencies in patients.

What is Happening with Clozaril, Fazaclo ODT and Versacloz?

Clozapine alters bowel function in many patients. Clozapine users may experience a range of symptoms from mild constipation to severe bowel malfunctioning, which can include total blockage of the bowels.  The FDA recently strengthened its warning that clozapine can lead to constipation that is serious enough to trigger bowel complications.  These bowel conditions may result in hospitalization or death if left untreated.

The FDA has warned patients taking clozapine to contact their health professionals immediately if they experience nausea, vomiting or bloating. These may signal a serious complication from the medication.  Health care professionals are advised to inform patients of the risks of clozapine, inquire about their patient’s bowel function, and consider other treatments when prescribing clozapine to patients with a history of constipation.
