HIP REPLACEMENT INFECTION INJURIES

Hip replacement surgery is a common procedure that is well tolerated by many patients. However, some patients who undergo hip replacement experience complications. They may develop an infection in the incision site or surrounding the implant. Infections that develop in the artificial joint require surgery in many cases.

What is Hip Replacement Infection?

Hip replacement infection is caused by the presence of bacteria following surgery. Bacteria may be introduced through the incision or transmitted to the site through the patient’s bloodstream. Unlike other bacteria that develop in the body, bacteria that reach an artificial implant cannot be destroyed by the immune system since the bacteria settles into the metal and plastic components of the device. As such, the bacteria can lead to infection either immediately following the procedure or months and years later. In some cases, an infection can develop even after the patient has recovered from surgery without incidence of infection. In addition, certain individuals may have conditions, such as immune system deficiencies, obesity and diabetes, that place them at an increased risk for developing infections following hip replacement surgery.

Once a patient is diagnosed with an infection following hip replacement, the method of intervention depends on the type of infection and when the infection occurred. When an infection is discovered soon after surgery and has not penetrated the artificial joint, it may be treated with antibiotics. If the infection has progressed beyond the superficial tissues, then surgery is almost always necessary. For infections that are detected early after surgery, surgeons can remove and decontaminate affected tissues and insert spacers. For infections that are detected long after surgery has been performed, staged surgery is usually required. This operation requires total removal of the implant, an extended regimen of antibiotics, and revision surgery. Staged surgery is the least desirable outcome and the most susceptible to complications.

What is Happening with Hip Replacement Infection?

A patient who is diagnosed with an infection following hip replacement surgery may have a lawsuit. An infection may result from any of the following: a defective implant, inadequate performance of the procedure, or deficient precautionary measures or post-surgery care by medical providers. In general, the incidence of infection should be minimal if proper measures are taken before and after surgery (such as administration of antibiotics).
