JUUL E-cigarette Vaping Lawsuits

Juul Vaping LawsuitVaping devices, including Juul, are marketed to teens and young adults as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, health experts have found that electronic cigarettes may have long-term adverse effects in addition to the known consequences of nicotine addiction. Juul, in particular, is regarded as a significant health risk due to its soaring popularity among young people and the extremely high doses of nicotine it delivers to users.

What is Juuling and Vaping?

The use of electronic cigarettes or “e-cigarettes” is referred to as vaping. Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling aerosol rather than tobacco smoke. Juul is a type of electronic cigarette that uses nicotine salts as its predominant ingredient. The use of nicotine salts mimics the experience of a typical cigarette. Juul is manufactured in a variety of flavors which are designed to appeal to youth and teens. A single Juul cartridge contains nearly the same amount of nicotine as one pack of cigarettes. Young people often do not realize that they are inhaling nicotine when smoking electronic cigarettes.

What is Happening with Juuling and Vaping?

Lawsuits against vaping manufacturers allege that manufacturers have recklessly marketed their products to young people and failed to warn consumers about the hazards of vaping. Vaping (and Juuling) has been linked to a number of serious health conditions. The long-term effects of vaping are not totally understood given that these products are relatively new to the market. However, studies have shown that electronic cigarettes present their own unique dangers.

Heart damage. E-cigarettes, and Juuls in particular, have been linked to impaired heart function and premature aging of an individual’s arteries and aorta. Young individuals who are otherwise in good health have suffered heart attacks after using Juul and other vaping devices. A new study demonstrating the tangible health risks of vaping found that daily use of electronic cigarettes may almost double the chances of having a heat attack.

Pneumonia. Vapor from electronic cigarettes may increase exposure to bacteria that causes pneumonia. Vaping makes the airways more susceptible to bacteria that stick to airway linings and increase the risk of infection. Other lung problems associated with vaping include hypersensitivity pneumonitis (a condition characterized by flu-like symptoms caused by inhaled organic dusts such as Juul vapors) and eosinophilic pneumonia (a lung condition caused by white blood cell accumulation in the lungs that typically requires intensive medical intervention).

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Electronic cigarette use has been linked to COPD, a common complication of traditional cigarette use that leads to severe respiratory issues that worsen over time. New research suggests that vapors from electronic cigarettes increase inflammation and destroy protective lung tissue, leaving cells susceptible to bacteria that cause COPD.

Electronic Cigarette Explosion. Electronic vaping devices have also been reported to spontaneously explode and cause serious injuries, including severe burns and disfigurement. Electronic cigarettes are battery powered; experts assume that battery-related malfunctions have caused the explosions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a statement providing safety instructions to avoid explosions and requesting information related to the combustion of electronic cigarettes.
