What is Legionnaires’ Disease?

Legionnaires’ disease is an infection that is contracted by breathing in vapor, mist, or water that contains the bacteria. While the bacteria are naturally-occurring in fresh water sources, when Legionella spreads in poorly maintained water and cooling systems, there is a serious risk of injury to those exposed to it. The disease is spread by inhalation rather than contact with another infected individual. It spreads upon entering the lungs and causes coughing, shortness of breath, fever, and muscle aches. Approximately 1 out of every 10 individuals who are diagnosed with the disease will die according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The individuals most vulnerable to significant complications and death are the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions.

What is Happening with Legionnaires’ Disease?

A recent outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease is the largest recorded epidemic of its kind in Georgia. The outbreak killed one woman and led to serious health complications for dozens of others who were staying at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel in July. An autopsy confirmed that the victim died from Legionnaires’ disease. Experts are looking into 75 reported cases of the disease, with 12 confirmed and 63 likely cases- all of whom were guests at the Sheraton Atlanta hotel. However, it is believed that hundreds of people were exposed to the potentially deadly bacteria and still do not know that they have the disease. The hotel closed on July 15 as a result of the outbreak.

Legionnaires’ Disease Side Effects and Complications

Side effects of Legionnaires’ Disease include:

Headache;
Muscle pain;
Chills;
Fever (as high as 104 F);
Cough, which may contain mucus or blood;
Shortness of breath;
Chest pain;
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea;
Mental changes;
Infections in wounds and bodily organs; and
Death.
