April 24, 2016, East Meadow, New York– This morning a large crowd gathered in Eisenhower Park in Long Island with the shared goal of finding a cure for mesothelioma, a fatal cancer caused by asbestos exposure. “The 5K Walk To Cure Meso” was organized by Erica Iacono whose father lost a courageous battle with mesothelioma. The run was sponsored by Levy Konigsberg, LLP, a law firm that has specialized in the representation of mesothelioma victims and their families for more than 30 years.
The money raised from this New York mesothelioma fundraiser was donated to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Don Blydenburgh and Jerome H. Block, trial attorneys with Levy Konigsberg joined the group of participants in the walk including local Long Island residents and family members and frends of those who have suffered with mesothelioma.
The event opened with Erica Iacono addressing the group about her mission to cure mesothelioma that began with the loss of her father and has grown into this annual fundraiser and Mr. Iacono’s service on the board for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Ms. Iacono then thanked Levy Konigsberg and invited Don Blydenburgh, a Long Island resident, to speak to the group. Mr. Blydenburgh thanked and commended Ms. Iacono for taking the tragedy with her father and creating a “fire in her belly” that has generated her positive work in raising money for mesothelioma. Mr. Blydenburgh shared his and the firm’s experiences in representing the “salt of the earth” people across the country suffering from mesothelioma. He also recognized and thanked Nurse Mary Hesdorffer, the Executive Director of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, for her work in helping victims of mesothelioma and their families.
Levy Konigsberg is known for both its long history of litigating asbestos cases, as well as establishing precedent-setting settlements and jury verdicts for mesothelioma victims. Mr. Blydenburgh most recently won a jury verdict of $10.55 million dollars in Upstate New York for the family of a man who died from mesothelioma. Mr. Block is the only attorney in New York State to have won jury verdicts in both asbestos and tobacco cases. In 2014, he won a verdict of $7 million dollars on behalf of a Long Island man living with mesothelioma against the largest power company that has operated historically in Long Island – the Long Island Lighting Company (“LILCO”), now known as National Grid LLC. The case arose out of asbestos exposures at the Northport, a well-known power plant in Long Island.
