Paraquat Lawsuits

Paraquat LawsuitParaquat is a highly toxic chemical herbicide that is associated with Parkinson’s disease. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated restrictive use for Paraquat based on its toxicity. Farmers and agricultural workers are most susceptible to Paraquat exposure. Several studies have linked frequent contact with the herbicide to the onset of progressive neurological deterioration that is the hallmark of Parkinson’s disease.

What is Paraquat?

Paraquat is a toxic chemical that is applied as an herbicide. Paraquat was first marketed for commercial use in 1961. It can only be used by commercially licensed applicators since it has been labeled by the EPA for “restricted use.” Paraquat poisoning can occur via ingestion or skin exposure. Paraquat continues to be one of the most used herbicides in the world.

What is Happening with Paraquat?

Several studies have reported that exposure to highly toxic pesticides such as Paraquat, in addition to rural living and farming work, is linked to an increased chance of developing Parkinson’s disease. A study in Nature Chemical Biology applied a gene editing technique to identify genes that that may lead to Parkinson’s disease after individuals were exposed to Paraquat. In another comprehensive study by Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), Paraquat was found to be the most concerning insecticide among dozens of toxic chemicals. EHP determined that the production of reactive oxygen species causes oxidative stress and damages cells. Oxidative stress has been identified as a primary factor in nerve cell death in Parkinson’s disease.

Researchers have recognized Paraquat as the chemical with the most data supporting a link to an elevated risk of Parkinson’s disease. Exposure to Paraquat was associated with a 2-3-fold increased risk over the general population. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive and chronic neurodegenerative condition.  The disease is characterized by impaired motor function, autonomic dysfunction, and cognitive decline.
