The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recently warned consumers that the Peloton Tread and Tread+ exercise machines may pose a risk of serious injury or death. The warning followed several reports of injuries sustained by adults, young children and pets who were pulled underneath Peloton machines. Thirty-nine incidents, including one death, have been identified by CPSC. Peloton announced a recall of its treadmills in May 2021 because of these reports.
Peloton Tread/Tread+ and Risk of Bodily Injury/Death
Experts have warned that the Peloton Tread+ may cause cuts, fractured bones, and even death as a result of a child becoming pinned and pulled under the rear roller mechanism of the machine. In the United States, the death of a six-year-old child precipitated the recall of over 125,000 Peloton Tread and Tread+ machines. Dozens of other incidents of children being sucked underneath the machine were reported since the victim’s death. The Peloton Tread was also recalled because the touchscreen can detach and fall causing risk of injury to the user.
CPSC Warns Consumers to Discontinue Use
The CPSC and Peloton alerted consumers who own the popular treadmills to discontinue use and contact the manufacturer. Initially, Peloton rejected CPSC’s advice and announced that the Tread+ can be used so long as the manufacturer’s safety instructions are followed by the user. Subsequently, Peloton reversed course and announced its support for CPSC’s recommendation.
Owners of the Peloton Tread+ who continue to use the machine were advised to place it in a locked room that is inaccessible to children and pets and keep the machine unplugged when not in use. However, a report of injury to a child while a parent was running on the treadmill suggests that the dangers of the machine may not be avoidable simply by taking these measures.
