What are Provigil and Nuvigil?
Provigil and Nuvigil promote wakefulness in patients who are diagnosed with sleep conditions including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and loss of sleep related to working the night shift. These medications do not cure sleep disorders, but provide temporary relief by activating areas of the brain that are responsible for wakefulness.
What is Happening with Provigil and Nuvigil?
In June 2019, Teva, the manufacturer of Provigil and Nuvigil, warned that pregnant women who take these drugs may expose their fetuses to the risk of developing structural and functional birth defects. Teva estimated that the rate of congenital malformations from the use of these drugs is approximately 15 percent (while the rate in the general population is about 3 percent). The European Medicines Agency and Health Canada have also alerted pregnant consumers that taking Provigil and Nuvigil may cause congenital disorders.
The use of Provigil and Nuvigil is associated with cleft lip or palate (an opening in the lip or upper roof of the mouth caused by improper formation of body tissues and cells), congenital heart defects (including atrial septal defects, atrioventricular septal defects, coarctation of the aorta, double-outlet right ventricle, pulmonary atresia, single ventricle, tetralogy of Fallot, total anomalous pulmonary venus return, tricuspid atresia, and truncus arteriosus), hypospadias (a birth defect in boys that prevents the proper formation of the opening of the urethra and may lead to difficulty urinating and sexual dysfunction), and microcephaly (a birth defect that causes underdevelopment of a baby’s brain and head and leads to seizures, learning disabilities and difficulties with motor movement). Congenital heart defects, hypospadias, and cleft lip or palate may require surgery. There is no cure or treatment for microcephaly.

Side effects of Provigil and Nuvigil include:
- Headache;
- Nausea;
- Diarrhea;
- Dry mouth;
- Anxiety;
- Nervousness;
- Dizziness;
- Insomnia;
- Irregular heartbeat;
- Hallucinations;
- Depression; and
- Mood changes
Serious side effects of Provigil and Nuvigil in pregnant women include:
- Microcephaly;
- Cleft lip or palate;
- Hypospadias;
- Congenital heart defects; and
- Death
