What is Rexulti?
Rexulti was released in 2015 as a newer form of the popular drug, Abilify. Abilify is a highly lucrative antipsychotic medication approved in 2002 to treat schizophrenia and depression. Both drugs belong to a class known as Dopamine D2 receptor partial agonists. The drugs operate in the same way by blocking certain serotonin receptors. Rexulti is a more powerful antipsychotic medication than its predecessor.
What is Happening with Rexulti?
One of the complications of Abilify is that users may engage in compulsive gambling. Other compulsive behaviors observed in Abilify users include shopping, eating and sexual activity. These behaviors have been reported in patients with no prior history of compulsive addiction. Rexulti appears to pose similar risks as those observed in Abilify patients because of the nearly identical content of the medications. These tendencies appear to stop once the medication is no longer used or the dose is significantly lowered.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices reports that Abilify and Rexulti interact with dopamine receptors in a manner that can lead to significant impulse control disorders in some patients. When the active ingredient in Rexulti, brexpiprazole, blocks dopamine at the D2 receptor, it stimulates the D3 receptor. The stimulation of the D3 receptor causes the patient to engage in compulsive behaviors. The dopamine system essentially releases pleasurable sensations that encourage the users to engage in activities that can result in compulsive behavior.
In February 2018, the FDA issued a safety warning for Rexulti stating that patients can become involved in compulsive gambling and other compulsive behaviors while taking the antipsychotic drug.
