What is Risperdal?
Risperdal is an antipsychotic medication approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and children, bipolar depression in adults and adolescents, and autistic symptoms in children. Originally, Risperdal was prescribed to address the side effects associated with older medications intended to treat psychotic disorders. However, Risperdal itself causes several serious complications that are similar to those caused by other antipsychotics. By blocking dopamine in certain regions of the brain, Risperdal stimulates the pituitary gland, resulting in the release of prolactin in the body. Prolactin stimulates breast tissue development in men and lactation in pregnant women.
What is Happening with Risperdal?
Gynecomastia has been reported in male children, adolescents, and adults on Risperdal. The development of male breast tissue is generally a permanent condition that does not improve when the medication is discontinued. Patients who have been diagnosed with gynecomastia may suffer emotional and psychological trauma and require surgery to correct the condition. In extreme cases, breast reduction or a mastectomy may be required.
Risperdal was improperly marketed to children prior to the drug’s approval for adolescents (in 2006) and prescribed for other non-approved uses. Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Risperdal, has been faced with hundreds of lawsuits by patients who developed gynecomastia after taking Risperdal. Johnson & Johnson has paid more than $3 Billion in penalties and settlements as a result of lawsuits generally related to Risperdal. Those who have suffered with gynostemia maintain that the manufacturer withheld important information about the risks of developing this disfiguring condition.

Risperdal Side Effects and Complication
Common side effects of Risperdal include:
- Weight gain;
- Drowsiness;
- Feeling restless or anxious;
- Increased appetite;
- Insomnia;
- Nausea and vomiting; and
- Cough, sore throat, and stuffy nose.
Serious side effects of Risperdal include:
- Gynecomastia (characterized by pain in the breast area, swelling of the nipples and breast area, and discharge);
- Fever, stiff muscles, and confusion;
- Uncontrolled shaking;
- Seizure;
- Flu symptoms;
- Sores inside the mouth;
- Trouble swallowing; and
- Feeling faint.
