South Shore Libra and Smart Basics 3-Drawer Dresser Lawsuits

South Shore Furniture recalled its 3-drawer dressers sold online at Walmart, Amazon, Target and other stores after one child was killed and another child was seriously injured when the chest tipped over.  The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned that failing to anchor the chest, or defectively anchoring the furniture to the wall, may lead to serious injuries or death in young children.

What is South Shore Libra and Smart Basics 3-Drawer Dresser?

What is Happening with South Shore Libra and Smart Basics 3-Drawer Dresser?

The family of a 2-year-old child has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the 3-drawer dresser after the little girl suffocated while stuck between the drawers of the dresser that had toppled over.  The lawsuit alleges that the retailer and manufacturer were aware that this dresser model has a tendency to fall over and presents a serious risk to small children.  South Shore recalled the Libra 3-drawer dresser following the toddler’s death.  The furniture maker issued two recalls in six months prior to the current recall for this same reason.

Safety regulators have long recognized the dangers of “furniture tip-over”, which affects thousands of families each year in the United States according to Consumer Reports.  Experts have labeled this danger as a “crisis” given the high number of deaths (195 deaths were reported between 2000 and 2016) from furniture tip-over. CPSC found that the number of tip-over injuries by dressers affecting children younger than 6 years old increased from 2,100 in 2015 to 2,800 in 2016.  Experts advise that the most reliable way to prevent tip-over is to anchor dressers to walls with brackets and straps.
