What is Surgical Stapler?
Surgical staplers can close wounds without using stitches. They may be applied to the skin or used for internal organs. Surgical staplers are preferable to stiches because they are more uniform and can close wounds in less time.
What is Happening with Surgical Stapler?
The FDA receives thousands of reports on an annual basis about injuries associated with surgical staplers. From January 2011 to March 2018 the FDA received more than 41,000 medical device reports concerning surgical staplers applied internally. Among these reports, 366 deaths and 9,000 serious injuries occurred. Patients who have had gastrointestinal procedures, such as gastric bypass surgery, accounted for a majority of the injuries and deaths related to surgical stapler use.
As a result of these incidents, the FDA issued a letter on March 8, 2019 to healthcare providers providing recommendations for stapler use and describing actions the agency intends to take to protect the safety and well-being of patients. The FDA found that many of these adverse incidents were attributed to surgical staples for internal use. Injuries and death from stapler use can arise in several ways including: rupture of staple lines, misfiring of staples, stapler malfunction, and incorrect application (such as using the wrong staple).
In addition to recommendations to promote safe surgical stapler use, the FDA intends to provide draft guidance for public comment in 2019 to advise surgical stapler manufacturers about proper product labeling. The FDA also intends to hold a public meeting to determine whether to reclassify surgical staplers as a Class II medical device due to the high number of reports associated with injuries and death from surgical stapler use.
Surgical stapler manufacturers, Covidien, plc and Ethicon, have been involved in recalls or lawsuits related to defective surgical staplers. Surgical stapler injuries and/or death can occur following gastric bypass surgery, colostomies, neck or thoracic surgery, lung surgery, appendectomies and heart surgeries.
