What is Synvisc-One?
Synvisc-One is a brand of hyaluronic acid injection. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that functions as a lubricant between joints. In healthy patients, the acid allows joints to move over each other without friction. In patients with osteoarthritis, the acid does not function properly. To relieve the pain and inflammation that results from this condition, Synvisc-One is injected into the joints. When non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are not effective, hyaluronic acid injections are prescribed.
What is Happening with Synvisc-One?
In response to numerous reports of complications with Synivisc-One injections, the manufacturer launched an investigation. Sanofi Genzyme voluntarily recalled one lot of Synvisc-One containing 12,000 syringes upon discovering microbial contamination in the affected lot. The manufacturer distributed a letter warning of the possibility of gram-negative bacterial infection in the syringes. The recall occurred on December 11, 2017 and affected syringes were distributed between October and November, 2017 in the United States. The FDA was aware of the recall according to Sanofi Genzyme.
In its notice to health care providers, the manufacturer warned that syringes in lot 7RSL021 should not be administered to patients until the investigation is complete. The contaminated lot was detected as a result of an increase in the number of adverse side effects reported by users. Patients who continue to use the injection may be at an increased risk of infection.
