ATLANTA, Georgia, December 4, 2012 – An article authored by LK whistleblower attorneys, entitled “Georgia Taxpayer Protection False Claims Act: The Peach State Gets Tough on Fraud against the Government,” was published in the November 2012 edition of Atlanta Lawyer Magazine. The article highlights the main provisions of Georgia’s newest and most comprehensive False Claims Act (click here to read the article).
The new Georgia law largely mirrors the Federal False Claims Act which dates back to the Civil War. To date, the Department of Justice has recovered over $30 billion under the Federal False Claims Act with the assistance of credible whistleblowers, who receive 15-25% of the government’s recovery in an intervened case. The Georgia Taxpayer Protection False Claims Act is an additional way for would-be whistleblowers to help the state recover funds that have been claimed or used by an entity in a false or fraudulent manner.
LK has a very active and successful practice in the area of False Claims Act or qui tam litigation. Just last year, the firm’s whistleblower attorneys acilitated a $70 million settlement for the United States Government against the City of New York. The action alleged that the City was falsely billing Medicaid in connection with services provided under the government funded Personal Care Services Program.
In addition, publication of the article in the Atlanta Lawyer Magazine culminates with the firm’s opening of a new office in Atlanta, GA.
