Ranitidine (Zantac) Lawsuits
Ranitidine, commonly known as Zantac, is used to prevent the formation of ulcers by decreasing the accumulation of acid in the stomach. Overproduction of acid can lead to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can be a precursor to other more serious conditions such as esophagitis, strictures, and esophageal cancer.
As we noted in a previous article, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert to inform consumers that some ranitidine medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) Zantac, contain low levels of a possible human carcinogen known as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

What is Ranitidine?
Ranitidine lowers acid levels in the stomach to prevent heartburn, GERD and ulcers. Zantac is a popular prescription and OTC medication containing ranitidine. FDA tests found the cancer-causing substance, NDMA, in both generic versions and brand name Zantac. A prescription is necessary when a patient must take a higher dose of Zantac for an extended period of time.
UPDATE: What is Happening with Ranitidine?
The level of NDMA in ranitidine continues to exceed the level that the FDA has determined is acceptable for NDMA in medications, which is set at 96 nanograms per day according to the 2018 ICH Guidance M7 (R1). For medications that exceed this level in tests, the FDA is asking manufacturers to initiate voluntary recalls of Ranitidine.
The FDA has still not determined the underlying source of NDMA or the cause of NDMA in ranitidine. But given the current information available, the FDA has advised users of OTC ranitidine and nizatidine (Axid) to use other OTC medications for acid reduction and heartburn relief. The FDA has not reported traces of NDMA in other medications that target the same conditions including Pepcid (famotidine), Tagamet (cimetidine), Nexium (esomeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole), and Prilosec (omeprazole).
In October, Sanofi, the manufacturer of Zantac, announced a voluntary recall of OTC Zantac in the United States and Canada even as FDA investigations continue. Other major manufacturers have recalled Zantac and halted distribution of the drug. In addition, CVS, Walmart, Walgreens and Rite Aid have all discontinued sales of Zantac.
