Asbestos Exposure – Todd Shipyard – Brooklyn, New York and Hoboken, New Jersey

With locations in Brooklyn New York and Hoboken, New Jersey, Todd Shipyard was once a maritime power. Boasting dry docks, work shops, fabrication centers and a repair facility, the Todd Shipyard was a self-contained community of skilled labor. Workers of all trades toiled in the yards, engaged in ship construction, conversion and repair. At its peak, the Todd Shipyard employed thousands of laborers, with 24-hour shifts to meet customer demand. Men and women from New Jersey and New York once called the Todd Shipyard home, and the legacy they left behind has become part of history.

Skilled tradespeople, including fabricators, pipefitters, boilertenders, carpenters and others worked together to support America’s dominance of international waters. Navy vessels, commercial vessels, cargo ships, tugboats and ferries were constructed at the Todd Shipyard for decades. Reaching a peak of 57,000 employees at the height of World War II, skilled tradespeople constructed war ships, landing craft, and various infantry vessels. Available statistics show that during the war effort, Todd Shipyard completed or repaired more than 1,000 ships, and repaired thousands more, earning recognition from the United States Government.

After the war, business continued to boom. As the world’s largest shipbuilder, contracts continued to pour in. While government orders slowed, Todd Shipyard began to focus on an ever-expanding base of private customers. Projects, including the construction and conversion of transport and delivery ships kept Todd Shipyard busy, and relevant. Between the 1950s and 1980s, skilled labor was still in demand, with residents in both New Jersey and New York finding ample work at the shipyard. For many families, Todd Shipyard was the only home a parent knew since the beginning of World War II.

Individuals involved in the construction or repair of military and commercial vessels were regularly exposed to asbestos. Locations like Todd Shipyard purchased vast amounts of asbestos-containing materials to complete various projects. Products like pumps, valves, boilers, generators, tanks, and other propulsion equipment regularly found on ships, contained numerous pieces of asbestos equipment. On many occasions, Todd Shipyard was required to deliver a “seaworthy” vessel, which would have required employees of the yard to insulate the products before the ship was completed. Additionally, many employees involved in Todd Shipyard’s repair business regularly opened up these products to inspect the integrity of the machinery.

One of Todd Shipyard’s highest priorities after World War II ended was competing in the conversion and repair business. Employees involved in this aspect of the business regularly handled asbestos-containing materials, including gaskets, packing, block and pipe covering. Many of the companies who designed products found on a ship, like pumps and valves, designed their products in a way that required asbestos materials. Employees maintaining or repairing these products had to remove or install asbestos products to ensure that a project was completed properly.
